Man Demands US$8,000 Following Women-Only ‘Wonder Woman’ Screening
By Kylie Woon, 10 Aug 2017
Texan cinema chain The Alamo Drafthouse made waves a few months ago for hosting a women-only screening of Wonder Woman.
Many praised the move as one in favor of girl power, drawing comparisons between the women-only event and the women-only island of ‘Themyscira’, where ‘Diane’—that is, ‘Wonder Woman’—hails from.
However, some men were disgruntled and described the event as sexist, and two such men decided to make their sentiments known by taking legal action, because it turns out that the screening did indeed violate Texan equality laws, according to My Statesman.
What do the men want as compensation?
One of them is demanding a public apology, and the other is asking for US$8,892—many times the value of the screening ticket.
Missy Reynolds, director of real estate and development for the cinema, said that the ‘women-only’ declaration had been “tongue in cheek”—simply a way to celebrate one of the rare occasions a female superhero graces the big screen in her very own movie.
Reynolds stated that the cinema often creates events designed to give guests an immersive feel, citing a previous event where the company screened Jaws over a beach and pretended the water was shark-infested.
The cinema has offered all offended men a copy of the Wonder Woman DVD.
What do you think—did Drafthouse do wrong, or did the men go overboard?
