In IKEA’s ‘Game of Throws’, Its Employees Poke Fun By Draping Rugs On Shoulders
By Izza Sofia, 11 Aug 2017
HBO’s Game of Thrones is one of the most spectacular and fully realized worlds to ever grace television. Its resourceful costume designers have brilliantly used IKEA rugs as pelts and capes for some of its extras—which the Swedish retailer is all too happy to jump on.
In the show, ‘Jon Snow’ wears animal skins so as to not freeze when winter comes. Instead of decking out the soldiers in real pelts, costume designers elected to take a trip to IKEA to buy PETA-approved faux animal skin rugs.
Fans of the show were seen flocking to IKEA to get their hands on the sheepskin rugs. IKEA noticed an upward surge in its online searches when it was revealed that the the stars of the show were wearing them.
According to GoT fan Rita Hunt, “I’d feel a bit daft wandering about the streets in a sheepskin rug, but I’ll wear it in winter while watching Games of Thrones. My husband will think [I’d] gone mad, but he doesn’t like Game of Thrones and will probably be watching the football on his iPad.”
Responding to the news, IKEA decked out some of its staff in the rugs in a real-time marketing stunt, jumping upon the Game of Thrones bandwagon in an organic way.
Textiles Sales Leader Carol McSeveney said, “We are flattered that our rugs are featured in Game of Thrones. We know these rugs are warm and cosy but we hadn’t envisioned them becoming a fashion accessory. Seeing them worn by ‘Jon Snow’ and his brothers in the Night’s Watch has inspired us to display them off the floor.”
