Disney previously got called out for apparently struggling to find a suitable actor to fill the role of ‘Aladdin’. Following the hoo-ha, it managed to placate public sentiment with its list of finalized cast members for the film.
Guy Richie’s upcoming live-action Aladdin film will have a diverse cast, much to the relief of Disney fans. The movie’s main cast includes Mena Massoud as ‘Aladdin’, Naomi Scott as ‘Jasmine’, Will Smith as the ‘Genie’, and Marwan Kenzari as ‘Jafar’.
All’s well that ends well, right? Not quite—the franchise has yet again received disdain for writing in a brand new character to cast Billy Magnussen, who’s best known for his parts in Into the Woods and Bridge of Spies. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Magnussen will be playing the role of ‘Prince Anderson’.
Magnussen, who has had experience playing a Disney prince (he was ‘Rapunzel’s prince in Into the Woods), isn’t the only one to play a new character in Aladdin. He is joined by former Saturday Night Live comedian Nasim Pedrad, who will play ‘Mara’, a “handmaiden and friend to ‘Jasmine’.”
However, Disney’s decision to include Magnussen in the cast of Aladdin has resulted in a whole new world of drama. The move has been viewed by the public as a deliberate attempt to include a white person in a story that has none.
