Of all the rumored iPhone 8 features and multiple leaks throughout the year, this latest feature—‘Animoji’—has truly caught the public by surprise.
It is a charming feature, unearthed by 9to5Mac within iOS 11 firmware, that boasts 3D animated versions of the adorable emoji already known and loved by many, including the monkey, alien, and oddly endearing pile of poop.
The fascinating part of the discovery is that these ‘Animoji’ can read and recreate the iPhone user’s facial expressions. Found in the iOS 11 firmware was data that “highlights a variety of expressions the iPhone 8 will be able to detect,” shares 9to5Mac.
“‘Animoji’ will be customized by the left and right eyebrows, cheeks, raising the chin, opening or squinting eyes, moving jaw, lips, as well as mouth movements like frowning and smiling.”
This means that the Animoji will be, to an extent, tailor-made—though the emoji will retain their likeness, they may be able to tilt their heads and mischievously raise their eyebrows just as individuals do—and are a big step forward in how emoji will be able to convey human emotion.
It is the second face-reading feature expected on the iPhone 8, following the Face ID function that allows users to login, unlock, and complete Safari AutoFill on the upcoming iPhone.
