Apple Confirms ‘Cracklegate’: Some iPhone 8, 8 Plus Emitting ‘Crackling’ Sounds
By Kylie Woon, 28 Sep 2017
Reddit and MacRumors have revealed that some iPhone 8 and 8 Plus users are experiencing a disconcerting ‘crackling’ sound when making cellular and FaceTime calls.
The disturbance originates in the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus earpiece but disappears when a call is put on speaker phone, leading afflicted users to believe the issue has to do with software rather than hardware.
In a statement made to CNN Tech, Apple acknowledged the issue, which some netizens have dubbed ‘Cracklegate’.
“We are aware of the issue which is affecting customers in a small number of cases. Our team is at work on a fix, which will be included in an upcoming software release,” said an Apple spokesperson.
The inauspicious crackling news comes right after the iOS 11.0.1 release, which was launched swiftly after the original iOS 11 was condemned for draining batteries and crashing apps. Unless iOS 11.0.2 comes just as rapidly, victims of ‘Cracklegate’ will have to endure the sound for a while longer.
