What do you remember from James Cameron’s 2009 blockbuster, Avatar? For some, the captivating visuals were the benchmark for 3D and 4D movies of the future. Some even recall the iconic CG romance scene.
Many creatives, on the other hand, would argue that the movie’s logo was the most memorable. SNL’s hilarious sketch—starring Ryan Gosling—might be a little late to the party, but it strikes a chord with what designers might unendingly feel about the notorious ‘Papyrus’ typeface.
Gosling plays ‘Steven’, a man perpetually traumatized by Avatar’s logo. “I forgot about it for years,” he broods. “But then I remembered that Avatar—the giant international blockbuster—used the ‘Papyrus’ font as its logo.”
The comedic video has since gone viral; it seems that even the mass public has opinions about the typeface.
CBS News has contacted ‘Papyrus’ creator Chris Costello for comment.
“I woke up this morning… and my email was full. I had a lot of people telling me, ‘Did you see this Saturday Night Live thing?’ I took a look at it and me and my wife were like cracking up, I mean we couldn’t stop laughing. It was one of the best things I’ve seen.”
Costello adds that he never expected the 35-year-old typeface to end up being the center of attention, especially on national television.
“I designed the font when I was 23-years-old. I was right out of college. I was kind of just struggling with some different life issues, I was studying the Bible, looking for God and this font came to mind, this idea of, thinking about the biblical times and Egypt and the Middle East. I just started scribbling this alphabet while I was at work and it kind of looked pretty cool.”
Little did the designer know that the typeface would make its way around “every computer in the world.”
About whether or not he believes ‘Papyrus’ deserves the title of one of the world’s most disliked typefaces, Costello maintains, “I really think—and again if I can take this time to apologize to my brother and sister graphic designers—I’m a graphic designer as well… I believe it’s a well-designed font. It’s well-thought out.”
