JPEG VS HEIF: Does iOS 11’s New Camera Format Destroy Image Quality?
By Kylie Woon, 07 Oct 2017
Apple’s iOS 11 update introduced the HEIF camera format to the iPhone. Short for ‘High Efficiency Image Format’, HEIF is virtually unknown, though claims to offer the same quality as JPEG images while offering twice the compression.
In this video, Apple Insider pits HEIF against the JPEG to discover which is best for iPhone photography.
The results show that while HEIF images do indeed compress well—JPEG files were, on average, 80% larger than HEIF files—this format did lead to some details lost, especially in low-light conditions.
However, seeing as how these losses were minimal, the quality of HEIF images remain incredibly impressive given the much smaller file sizes.
Find out more about how HEIF will affect your image quality in Apple Insider’s video below.
