Dove’s Ad Showing A Black Woman Becoming White Sparks Consumer Outrage
By Izza Sofia, 10 Oct 2017
Dove is facing criticism after an ad they posted of a black woman taking off her shirt and skin to become a white woman went viral.
The brand was accused of racism over the online advertising campaign, and it later admitted it has “missed the mark” with an image posted on Facebook.
The advert showed a black woman removing her top to reveal a white woman underneath supposedly after using Dove body lotion.
Dove apologized in a statement, “Dove is committed to representing the beauty of diversity. In an image we posted this week, we missed the mark in thoughtfully representing women of color and we deeply regret the offense that it has caused.”
Marissa Solan, a spokeswoman for Dove, said on Sunday that the GIF “was intended to convey that Dove Body Wash is for every woman and be a celebration of diversity, but we got it wrong and, as a result, offended many people.”
However the damage was done and comments about the ad were almost exclusively negative. Many social media users called for a boycott of Dove’s products. Take a look at some responses below.
