This sprawling walkway in Hebei, China offers stunning views of the Taihang Mountains from all angles—and that includes under your feet, since the walkway is made of glass and built a mind-boggling 3,871 feet above sea level.
In case a glass bridge attached to the edge of a mountain isn’t terrifying enough, Taihang administrators decided to engage in some heart-stopping “fun” with a PR stunt involving a ‘cracking glass’ effect to terrify hikers.
Naturally, the prank did not go down well.
In a viral video, a “seemingly unaware” tour guide is seen falling to his knees and crying out in fright after his footsteps trigger the pressure-sensitive ‘cracking glass’. It creates the illusion that the glass below him is splintering.
Without any context, you might think that the glass bridge is really falling apart. Upon closer inspection, however, you’ll notice that the passer-by, who walks into the frame towards the end of the video, is completely unaffected by the occurrence, and that the tour guide’s expressions are merely exaggerated for show.
Following the horror experienced by the public, Taihang administrators put out an apology—sort of.
In a statement, the administrators expressed regret that some had been frightened, but then proclaimed that hikers would be unable to tell if the “kacha” sound produced by their prank was that of glass cracking or the sound of their own broken hearts. Finally, they said that the PR stunt would continue so more could experience it for themselves.
In a video, Chinese media network CGTN reported that the bridge is inspected and maintained daily to ensure safety. Mashable has reported that many Chinese netizens have deemed the apology insufficient, as such a shock could trigger a heart attack or other medical emergencies in startled hikers.
Take a look at the horrifying prank below.
