AI Uses Real Celebrities’ Photos To Create Wholly Realistic New Faces
By Yoon Sann Wong, 01 Nov 2017
California-based technology company Nvidia is working on a new AI that can generate completely original faces using photos of real people.
It recently published its findings after the team experimented with a novel technique to train the AI, and successfully churned out a collection of realistic—but wholly fictitious faces—based on photos of real celebrities. The results were submitted to the International Conference on Learning Representations 2018 (ICLR).
While the project still requires much work, the team expressed confidence that “convincing realism may now be within reach.”
The AI is fed a large quantity of data, in this case the photos of celebrities, and a training system called General Adversarial Network (GAN) helps it create the desired result—that is, the computer-generated faces—over days or even weeks.
In the video below, you’ll see a preview of the generated images. While the innovation is exciting, the rapid development of AI poses questions with regards to its uses and potential dangers. For one, the technology’s already making waves in the gaming industry. Earlier this year, Elon Musk’s AI bot destroyed top Dota 2 players in an experience that would scare even non-gamers.
