Contemporary architecture firm MVRDV has teamed up with the Tianjin Urban Planning and Design Institute (TUPDI) to design Tianjin Binhai Library, one part of the district’s masterplan to build a cultural hub.
A mirrored spherical ‘Eye’—which houses an auditorium—sits in the heart of the psychedelic library. It commands the form of the topographical bookshelves that wrap around it.
The contoured bookshelves unfold elegantly to the roof of the building. A sea of books, made to be browsed by readers on the stepped shelves, adds a pop of color to the entire set.
According to China Daily, the magnificent architecture of Tianjin Binhai Library—dubbed the ‘eye of Binhai’—has attracted immense attention on Chinese social media. The images of the cultural landmark have been liked and shared hundreds of thousands of times on social network Weibo.
Thanks to the library’s futuristic, fluid design, netizens have commented, “Now I know what an ocean of knowledge looks like.”
