Flying might not exactly be the most relaxing experience on earth. You’re strapped in for hours with crying babies in tow, and some airlines have even introduced mid-flight concerts—entertainment you cannot escape from.
Naturally, you’ll want your flight to be as comfortable as possible. You’ll make sure you have a pillow, you’re well-hydrated, and that you’re all prepped for a long nap. Thankfully, there’s more you can do in advance to make your journey endurable—enjoyable, even.
In an article on Oyster, flight attendant Annie Kingston divulges the part of the plane that will give you the most bang for your buck: the back.
“[F]light attendants know that if you’re sitting towards the back, you’ll receive the most attentive service. The reason is simple: We like to avoid responding to call bells from the front of the plane because answering one means potentially flaunting whatever item the passenger has requested to everyone else along the way.”
Kingston points out that there are scarcity issues on planes—they don’t have enough wine, pillows, or towels to last for hours.
It’s easier to sneak a snack to someone at the back without alerting other passengers—plus you’ll be attended to even more promptly. “For passengers sitting near the back of the plane, however, it's much easier to slip in that second mini bottle of wine.”
