Instances of blackface in the beauty industry are still happening.
The most recent case involves a Russian makeup artist who goes by the Instagram handle @notcatart. The beauty blogger posted a video showing his skin color transformation with the caption, “WHITE TO DARK 👅 I love skin of all colors and this look is inspired from it.. That we all are beautiful... And I wanna show you how it’s beautiful 😍 love it! #macartistchallenge #maccosmetics #thebodyshopcosmetics #anastasiabeverlyhills #anastasiabrows #abhbrows #nyxcosmetics #nyxcosmeticsrussia #allraces #desioeyes #desiolenses.”
To escalate the matter further, he played Yo Gotti’s ‘Rake It Up’ in the background as he applied a pink lip and a bottom grill. This post received a ton of backlash, so much that the makeup artist disabled the post’s comments section.
Instead of removing the upload, he reposted the picture with the updated caption, “I will posted it again and again... love u guys ❤️.” This occurred even after another Instagrammer began posting alleged screenshots of @notcatart’s inflammatory responses to commenters calling him out.
While the beauty blogger made the point to mention that he “loved skin of all colors,” piling on dark makeup is definitely not the way to show his appreciation for people of color.
..🤢🤢🤢 @notcatart on ig IS FIRED. INDEFINITELY. This "makeup boy" responding with that picking cotton comment + the grill he threw in let's you know the real intentions. Disgusting. pic.twitter.com/edZYBZXPEv— QueenOfBlending (@queenofblending) November 27, 2017
