Many of you are probably familiar with Grumpy Cat, the crabby-looking kitty famous for its appearance brought about by dwarfism and an underbite. The feline—real name Tardar Sauce—became renowned in 2012 after its image was shared on Reddit.
Owners of the Grumpy Cat brand have won their copyright infringement lawsuit against US coffee company Grenade for £500,000 (US$700,000) claiming unauthorized usage of the animal’s pictures.
In 2013, the pair made a £105,171 (US$150,000) deal that allowed Grenade Beverages to use Grumpy Cat Limited’s photo solely for its iced drink range.
The latter, however, filed court documents in 2015 alleging that Grenade had used the graphic to sell roasted coffee plus ‘Grumpuccino’ t-shirts, and that this “blatantly infringed” the copyright.
Grenade countersued, asserting that its beverages and company name weren’t shared via the Grumpy Cat brand’s social media channels as much as it was originally led to believe. Grenade said that the brand’s owners had indicated that the cat would star in a film alongside Hollywood actors Will Ferrell and Jack Black, which did not occur.
Eventually, the California jury ruled in favor of Grumpy Cat Limited and Grenade was ordered to pay out for the copyright infringement.
