The 2018 Winter Olympics kicked off in Pyeongchang, South Korea on Friday. While it’s an exciting time for its athletes, a beverage brand might have already walked away with a win through free, unintentional advertising.
As viewers tuned in to the live stream of the opening ceremony, they were surprised to see a group of traditional drummers get in formation to what apparently looked like Pepsi’s logo. It was, of course, a representation of the South Korean flag.
“Did anyone else think the 2018 Winter Olympics [was] sponsored by Pepsi?” asked a Twitter user.
As it turns out, she wasn’t the only one who thought the image served as product placement for Pepsi at first.
“I wonder how much Pepsi paid the Olympics for this opening ceremony shoutout,” joked another.
Here’s a comparison between South Korea’s flag and the Pepsi logomark. To be fair, they do look pretty similar.

I for one am sick and tired of the commercialization of the olympics. South Korea making a giant human Pepsi logo during the opening ceremonies?? For shame. pic.twitter.com/9lu0z1xTll— KurtisBlowVEVO (@BWetherJohnson) February 9, 2018

Was watching the opening ceremony of Winter Olympics with my bartender and he was disgusted at Pepsi’s blatant advertising being incorporated into the show. What are South Korea playing at? 😜 pic.twitter.com/lA89Gx40MO— Roger Clark (@rclark98) February 11, 2018
