Watch: What Inspired The Stunning, Bold Costume Designs Of ‘Black Panther’

One of the most memorable elements of Marvel’s new record-breaking Black Panther film is certainly its remarkable and vibrant costume designs.
In this three-minute clip by The New York Times, costume designer Ruth E. Carter sheds light on the inspirations behind the various attires, which not only pay homage to African culture, but also accurately portray each character’s personality and role.
For instance, when it came to designing for the ‘Dora Milaje’, a group of female warriors and personal body guards of the ‘Black Panther’, Carter opted for a bright vibrant red for which she explains, “[N]ot because we only had eight girls, but I also thought that eight girls in bright red would feel like 80 girls in bright red.”
