If you’re a shutterbug who’s always had trouble remembering the numerical sequence, which relates to the amount of light entering the camera lens, this minute-long tutorial by freelance filmmaker Griffin Hammond will have you remembering the arrangement in no time.
Using only two numbers—“1” and “1.4”—Hammond explains how they are enough to easily memorize the entire scale.
Here’s how to remember that a f/1.4 lens allows in four times more light than a f/2.8 lens since the aperture increases by two “stops”:
