Apple’s New Patent Filing Hints At New Lightning Connector With Waterproof Seal
By Izza Sofia, 11 Mar 2018
Apple’s future devices could soon feature a new type of Lightning connector.
Reported by Patently Apple, Apple has filed for a new patent application which hints at much durable Lightning connector that has higher water resistance.
The report explains that smartphones tend to be exposed to harsh conditions since people use it daily. Therefore, the patent application shows several ideas to make the Lighting connectors more resilient.
The application shows the company redesigning the connector into a wedge-shape to form a water-tight seal. Apple will add a generator and pistons to strengthen it further.
“A liquid-tight seal is formed between the accessory and the electronic device," the application states, for accessories “that are useful in moist, wet and/or dirty environments.”
Apple also plans to take a step further by sealing the entrance completely with a rubber gasket which you can squeeze tightly once the cable is inserted into the port. This way, iPhone users are capable of using their accessories while their iPhone is in water.
However, the patent filing does give a confirmation that Apple will be implementing it anytime soon so do not keep your hopes up too high.
