It looks like Google might have a strategy in the works to not only counter Apple’s iPhone unveiling in September, but also appeal to emerging markets.
Several months back, news about Google potentially releasing a more affordable ‘Pixel 3’ smartphone, in addition to its premium ‘Pixel 3’ and ‘Pixel 3 XL’ began surfacing online.
When its ‘Pixel 3’ smartphone codenames were initially leaked late last year, three aliases were revealed: ‘Crosshatch’, ‘Albacore’, and ‘Blueline’.
The latest leak by Roland Quandt of Berlin-based news site WinFuture similarly suggests that this third ‘Pixel 3’ could belong to the mid-range category and come “based on the Snapdragon 710.” He adds that it’s potentially “scheduled for launch in the 1st half of 2019,” and that the “[h]ardware dev work in this only just started about a month ago.”
This tentative release date comes after the anticipated October 2018 launch for its ‘Pixel 3’ and ‘Pixel 3 XL’.
Off to Taiwan for @computex_taipei today, but here's a tidbit for ya: Google is working on a "mobile" device based on the Snapdragon 710 currently scheduled for launch in the 1st half of 2019. Sounds like this might be the (or one of them) upcoming mid-range Pixel phone.— Roland Quandt (@rquandt) June 2, 2018
No I do not know if there is one planned for this year. No I do not know any specifics in this device, only the CPU. Hardware dev work in this only just started about a month ago.— Roland Quandt (@rquandt) June 2, 2018
Thus far, Google’s ‘Pixel 2’ has managed to impress fans with its camera quality. The model currently stands in sixth position on the most recent DxOMark—a leading industry source for independent image quality measurements and ratings pertaining to smartphones, cameras, and lenses—ranking, behind Huawei’s ‘P20 Pro’, HTC’s ‘U12+’, Huawei’s ‘P20’, Samsung’s ‘Galaxy S9 Plus’, and Xiaomi’s ‘Mi 8’.
The ‘Pixel 2’ is currently priced at US$649 (64GB) and US$749 (128GB), while its ‘Pixel 2 XL’ is retailing at US$849 (64GB) and US$949 (128GB). Similar price tags are anticipated for the ‘Pixel 3’ and ‘Pixel 3 XL’.
