New Book Takes You Inside Apple’s Design Process During Steve Jobs’ Era
By Yoon Sann Wong, 09 Aug 2018
Ex-Apple engineer Ken Kocienda, who worked at the company between 2001 and 2016, has penned a new book called Creative Selection that brings you behind-the-scenes on Apple’s design process during the golden age of Steve Jobs.
The tome includes Kocienda’s personal anecdotes on developing the iPhone and iPad, as well as demonstrating these projects to Jobs.
Its synopsis writes, “Kocienda shares moments of struggle and success, crisis and collaboration, illuminating each with lessons learned over his Apple career. He introduces the essential elements of innovation―inspiration, collaboration, craft, diligence, decisiveness, taste, and empathy―and uses these as a lens through which to understand productive work culture.”
As a lead up to the book’s 4 September launch, 9to5Mac has shared an exclusive excerpt from Creative Selection that shows the struggles Apple’s designers had faced when developing the iPhone’s software keyboard.
At the time, the industrial design of the iPhone was not yet finalized. All the software design team had to work with was creating a multi-touch user interface for an “all screen” phone.
From trying to fit the keys on the screen to making them wide enough for accessibility by a human finger, the challenges made the design anything but obvious.
