Gap Features Hijab-Wearing Kid In New Campaign, Earns Applause From Internet
By Izza Sofia, 12 Aug 2018
American fashion retailer Gap has earned kudos from netizens for its latest campaign, which features a Muslim girl wearing a hijab in its back to school collection advertisement.
Model Hamdia Ahmed, who was the first Miss Maine Pageant to wear a hijab, noticed the ad and then shared the image on Twitter. In the post, she publicly exclaimed “this makes me so happy OMG!”
Over the years, minorities such as African-Americans, Hispanics and Muslims have not exactly been afforded much space in the world of mainstream advertising that puts them in a positive light.
That face of fashion, however, is currently evolving as major industry names spearhead change.
British Vogue recently created waves when they featured Rihanna on their cover, a first for the African-American community. H&M has also recruited a Diversity Leader recently, who is responsible for “addressing diversity and inclusiveness.”
