Jameela Jamil has used her platform to speak up on the truth behind her beauty routine, but some nitpickers have expressed disdain at her.
Recently, the actress shared a barefaced selfie taken ahead of the recent Emmy Awards, where she smiled into the camera with her wet hair. She was complimented by a fan, who commented, “Your skin is so perfect.”
Seeing the compliment, Jamil then proceeded to list down the various reasons behind her clear skin. “My skin is clear because: A) Privileged people have more access to good quality nutrition and also our lives are significantly less stressful than the lives of those with less privilege,” she began her lengthy response.
She then continued sharing her other secrets to glowing skin. “B) I believe that trans rights are human rights… C) I exfoliate twice a week,” she continued. She also shared a screenshot of the conversation on Instagram Stories, adding, “Try not to compare your skin to that of privileged people too often. We don’t talk about this enough.”
Throughout her post, Jamil encouraged women not to compare their skincare routines with celebrities as many have acquired help beyond beauty products due to their “privilege.”
However, some fans weren’t too impressed with her comments, as they thought she was “condescending.”
“Girl don’t you see how out of touch you sound? It was so condescending. No one was comparing their skin and you’re acting like ‘I’m rich that’s why you’re poor sorry luv’,” an Instagram user wrote.
Jamil immediately responded to the criticisms, detailing her rationale for the post. “I responded with a very honest comment about how privilege impacts my skin to make the point that people comparing themselves to privilege people is a losing game, and I wanted to shine a light on that because this entire industry feeds of the lack of transparency around this,” she explained.
She ended her statement by stating that she cares about “this generation” and she doesn’t “want to be part of the cycle of harm.”
She also shared one of her tweets reading, “I would like to make it extremely clear that I don’t give a flying f**k about what people think my intentions are.”
Jamil has also made it clear that she will continue to use her platform to speak about various issues that are important to her.
