Disney and Pixar have been sued for allegedly creating a character in Toy Story 4 based on stunt performer Evel Knievel.
According to documents obtained by TMZ, a company called K&K Promotions, which is headed by Knievel’s son and claims to own all the rights to Knievel’s likeness, brand and trademarks, stated that Disney “did not get any type of approval” for the inspiration for the character, Duke Caboom.
Duke Caboom, voiced by Keanu Reeves, is arguably a toy version of the stuntman and bears similarities to the old-school Knievel toys which “[come] with an energizer to wind up and release his bike,” per the documents.
K&K Promotions also stated that Disney had instructed people involved in the production of Toy Story 4 to avoid mentioning Knievel’s name during interviews.
K&K Promotions has asked Disney for “big-time damages” to be paid out for the infringement.
