Disney has released its first trailer for the upcoming movie Cruella starring Emma Stone as young Cruella de Vil.
The movie tells the origin story of Cruella de Vil, a character who made waves in the 1996 movie 101 Dalmations when it was played by Glenn Close. According to Insider, Close will act as an executive producer alongside Stone, who will play the iconic villain.
The trailer showed fans on what to expect in the upcoming film, which is set in London during the 1970s. According to the movie’s description, it will show how the character, who is an aspiring designer named Estella, turns into a vengeful villain.
Reactions on social media range from excited to baffled, with some comparing Stone’s character to Joker, played by Joaquin Phoenix.
“I do love the premise of Cruella is what if someone girlboss’d so hard they became the Joker,” a Twitter user joked.
Others thought Cruella resembles Suicide Squad’s Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie). “Honestly, going the Harley Quinn route with Cruella is lowkey genius. I think Emma Stone is about to eat it up not going to lie. The visual style also looks a lot different than these other live-action re-imaginings,” a Twitter user weighed in.
Some, however, criticized the absurdity of the film’s premise, whose aim might have been to give Cruella a backstory that “explains all her motivations for wanting to murder dogs,” and pin her against villains “worse than the woman who just wants to murder dogs for fashion.”
Cruella is set for release on 28 May.

the CRUELLA trailer LOOKS nice but also i think sometimes ladies who love fashion should be allowed to remain ladies who love fashion and not the joker

I swear to god you pull a Maleficent and try to make this character, a character whose MAIN TRAIT is wanting to kill and skin puppies, into a "sympathetic villain", I'm gonna be so mad. This has the opportunity to be a fun villainy crime film. Don't ruin it. https://t.co/LEuJbwZeqe

DISNEY EXEC #2:...really?
— ALK Alters (@AltersAlk) February 17, 2021
DISNEY EXEC #1: Yeah, it's great, we'll give her a tragic backstory that explains all her motivations.
DISNEY EXEC #2:...her motivations for wanting to murder dogs.
