You’ve probably been hearing about the McPlant, McDonald’s burger with a plant-based patty, for about a year now, following its introduction in November 2020. It has been tested sporadically in stores in the UK, Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Austria.
Now, the brand has confirmed that it will be hitting US stores soon as part of a worldwide taste test of sorts.
For a limited time starting November 3, the burger will be available in eight stores nationwide. These are Irving and Carrollton, Texas; Cedar Falls, Iowa; Jennings and Lake Charles, Louisiana; and El Segundo and Manhattan Beach, California.
Apart from testing the reception to the new burger, the restaurants will also be reporting how the new patty will impact kitchens and delivery.
As detailed by McDonald’s, the McPlant was developed in collaboration with Beyond Meat to include a plant-based patty made with peas, rice and potatoes. It’s exclusive to McDonald’s for now, which serves the patty up with tomato, lettuce, pickles, onions, mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard and a slice of American cheese on a sesame seed burger.
“It has the iconic taste of a McDonald’s burger, because it is one,” the company writes.
While it’s suitable for vegetarians, the cheese and mayonnaise would not make it entirely vegan-friendly. CNN also states that the patty would be cooked on the same grill as meat and egg products.
As for whether it’ll be made available in other locations or permanently included on the menu, that will largely depend on how this initial testing phase goes. It looks like we’ll just have to wait and see.
