Nothing & Swedish House Mafia Are Bringing Personalized Ringtones Back
With the advent of smartphones, the era of personalized ringtones has given way to a world where everyone seems to have the same default sound. Gone are the days when individuals carefully selected unique melodies to reflect their personalities or favorite songs.
But not if tech brand Nothing has anything to say about it. Along with its new system update, Glyph, for its Phone 1 and its incoming Phone 2, it seems like personalized ringtones are back in business, and this time with a twist.
With ‘Glyph Composer’, users can select five pre-recorded tunes curated by the EDM supergroup Swedish House Mafia. And if that’s not the beat you’re after, you can also create your own. The idea behind this is highly reminiscent of the old customizable ringtones from the aughts. Back then, phones usually came with a simple touchpad system that allowed people to unleash their inner composer and type out a little beat for themselves.
The same can be seen on the Glyph user interface, with different shapes matching different beats. All you would have to do is hit out a tempo, give it a name, and voilà! No more feeling your pockets to see if your phone is ringing whenever someone else nearby gets a call. Each recording needs to be eight to 12 seconds long for it to be used for calls, and a two-second sample can be used as a notification chime.
The fun doesn’t stop there, as LED lights are on the back of the Nothing devices. Different beats and tones correspond to different lights, so when your phone begins to ring, it will start flashing in a series of patterns.
According to Android Police, the collaboration between Nothing and Swedish House Mafia is not as random as you would think. Members Axwell, Sebastian Ingrosso, and Steve Angello have been early investors in the company since its inception in 2020.
Glyph Composer will be ready for use this summer after the official launch of Nothing Phone 2 on July 11.
