When it comes to the world of luxury accessories, one bag stands above the rest, and that is the Birkin bag. Its popularity has been unquestionable, as evident from data gathered from Google searches and Instagram activity by Slingo. The report, published on WWD, showcases an average of 159,208 monthly searches between 2020 and 2023.
The Birkin bag traces its origins back to a chance encounter on a flight between French actress Jane Birkin and Jean-Louis Dumas, the chief executive of Hermès, in the early 1980s. As the story goes, Jane Birkin expressed her dissatisfaction with the impracticality of her purse, and this conversation sparked the idea for a new and refined design.
What sets the Birkin apart is not only its design and craftsmanship but also its high price tag. The most affordable Birkins start at US$10,000, and some that are crafted from extremely rare materials (like crocodile skin straight from the fashion house’s own farm) reach six-figure prices.
Yet, the allure of the Birkin goes beyond its price. Its exclusivity plays a pivotal role in adding to its desirability. Unlike many other designer purses, the Birkin cannot be purchased directly from Hermès boutiques. Instead, a sales associate must personally offer it to a client, often after the client has established a reputation for purchasing from the company.
Adding to the exclusivity is the limited number of Birkin bags each boutique can order, with only two opportunities to do so a year.
Notably, the passing of Birkin earlier this month profoundly impacted its popularity. Following her departure, searches for the Birkin bag experienced a noticeable spike, demonstrating the enduring connection between the accessory and its iconic namesake.
While the Birkin holds the top spot in the world of designer purses, there are other notable contenders. The Louis Vuitton Neverfull comes in second place, boasting an average of 126,729 monthly searches.
Claiming the third spot on the list is Gucci’s Marmont, which has become a staple for the brand since its debut in 2016. With an average of 82,375 monthly searches, the Marmont solidifies its position as an iconic fashion piece.
