The wait is agonizing for fans of the gritty, Joaquin Phoenix-led portrayal of the Joker. But to tide us over, Warner Bros Pictures and director Todd Phillips have offered a tantalizing first look at the upcoming sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux, with an official poster.
Central to the emotive visual is a scene bathed in dramatic spotlight. Arthur Fleck, Joker’s birth name, played by Phoenix, leans in close, a cigarette dangling from his lips. His partner in this macabre dance is none other than Lady Gaga, making her debut as Harley Quinn. Her costume and makeup are smeared, hinting at a life that twirls with the chaos of her counterpart.
Phoenix dips Gaga backwards, a gesture that could be interpreted as playful or controlling, mirroring the film’s title, Folie à Deux, a French term for a shared delusional disorder.
The tagline, “The world is a Stage,” not only echoes Shakespearean tragedy but also potentially foreshadows the “jukebox musical” style rumored for the film. It could also be a metaphor for the Joker’s psychological descent, where Gotham City becomes his twisted plaything.
The Joker sequel is set to dance into theaters on October 4, with the first trailer coming on April 9. Just what kind of madness will the pair’s shared delusion bring?
