Cincinnati, OH - As part of the 2005 Cincinnati Fringe Festivals' twelve-day festival of arts, the Cincinnati Black Theatre Company will present the world premiere of A Bag of Groceries by Phil Paradise June 2-11 at Memorial Hall, 1225 Elm St., Cincinnati, Ohio.
As part of the two-week festival of performing, visual and graphic arts, the Cincinnati Black Theatre Company will present five performances of playwright Phil Paradise's A Bag of Groceries. The contemporary realistic drama/comedy dramatizes culture clash and the challenges of communication in a metropolitan city park. When the three main characters get talking, sparks fly and it's like group therapy on the street and everybody seems to have some baggage they're carrying. The 60 minute one act play explores cross-cultural communication and mother-son and race relations.
Veteran director and actor Tony Darnell Davis directs the cast which includes Adverse, Gregory Andrews, Michael Monks, Kiara Blanks, and Piper Davis. Says Director Tony Davis, "It's a fun, edgy. It's about language, race, sex, food, motherhood. It's a mixed bag about communicating, about finding common ground. And it's about time." Davis points out the play is rated for adults and teens due to some adult language.
Playwright Phil Paradise is a member of The Dramatist's Guild of America and President of Cincinnati Playwrights Initiative. Four of his plays have received stage readings in the Cincinnati Playwrights Initiative New Voices Series. A Bag of Groceries was selected for stage readings in the 4th Midwest Regional Black Theatre Festival and Cincinnati Playwrights Initiative's New Voices Series. Phil Paradise and his family live in Highland Heights, Kentucky.
Director Tony Darnell Davis is completing his 32nd year in theater. He has worked in Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park's Julius Caesar, Sweet Bird of Youth, Macbeth, A View From The Bridge, Romeo and Juliet and Threepenny Opera. For Ensemble Theater of Cincinnati, Mr. Davis worked on Cobb, Copperheads and That serious He-Man Ball. His movie credits are: Conable, Dream Catcher, Milk Money, City of Hope, A Rage in Harlem, Heart of Steele, Brubaker and Old Boyfriends. He has appeared in numerous commercials and training films and has produced shows for cable television. President of the Cincinnati Black Theatre Company, Mr. Davis teaches acting at the University of Cincinnati.
Show dates and times are: Thursday June 2 at 9 pm, Sunday June 5 at 4 pm, Thursday June 9 at 9 pm, Friday June 10 at 7 pm, Saturday June 11 at 6 pm. All five performances of A Bag of Groceries will be at Memorial Hall (1), 1225 Elm St., Cincinnati, OH. Ample street and lot parking are available.
