The board—comprised of citizen members who have an interest in the state's environmental policy (including Harden) and commissioners of New York State government agencies (such as the state Department of Environmental Conservation)—reviews and implements all changes to New York's environmental policy. In particular, it addresses issues such as greenhouse gas emissions standards and brownfields cleanup legislation.
Harden is a fifth-generation family member of the 126-year old Harden Furniture. From his leadership position at the company, he has addressed forestry and related wildlife and water conservation issues. This fact is particularly significant considering Harden Furniture owns or manages over 20,000 acres of renewable forests in the central New York region.
In 2003, Harden Furniture was the first major furniture manufacturer to land SFI certification from the Sustainable Forestry Initiative.
