"I and senior management agree with the American public that this was an ill-considered project. We are sorry for any pain this has caused the families of Ron Goldman and Nicole Brown-Simpson," Mr. Murdoch said in a statement issued this afternoon.
The statement came after days of controversy about the book, titled "If I Did It, This is How It Happened," that was to be a hypothetical accounting by Mr. Simpson about how he might have killed his ex-wife, Nicole, and Mr. Goldman.
New Corp.'s ReganBooks was to publish the book, and Fox was to air two hours of interviews with Mr. Simpson by Judith Regan about the book Nov. 27 and Nov. 29.
Some Fox stations had already refused to air the programs, which were also denounced by Fox News Channel's Bill O'Reilly. Another arm of News Corp., however, had no problem promoting the special and book. The New York Post gave over its front page to a story about the book and specials, proclaiming the book a confession by Mr. Simpson, and gave over an inside page to Ms. Regan to explain why she was publishing the book.
