- Artists of top 40 designs will showcase their work on 40 postboxes in the civic, cultural, shopping and business districts in Singapore's city area;
- Public to vote for top 10 designs in nation-wide competition;
- Overall winners of each category will win $5,000 cash while eight merit winners will be awarded $500 each.
Singapore residents will have the opportunity to turn postboxes in the city area into works of art with the launch of STAMP, the nation's first postbox public art competition. The competition is organised by creative interest group FARM and jointly presented by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), Singapore Post Limited (SingPost), Singapore Totalisator Board and Singapore Turf Club.
STAMP is the first project to be supported in the second cycle of URA's Architecture and Urban Design Excellence (A•UDE) Promotion Programme. The A•UDE Promotion Programme was developed by URA in 2005 to encourage the community to initiate activities and events that will invigorate and enliven our cityscape and public spaces. In line with this objective, STAMP will provide a platform for the community to add a personal touch to and build a new identity for their physical surroundings through the creation of their very own "mini-monuments" out of postboxes. The organisers hope that through this, people will grow to appreciate the role that art & design plays in influencing and enriching their day-to-day experiences and the environment around them.
Getting Involved in STAMP
To be part of the competition, participants can enter the Student Category (for Primary and Secondary School students) or Open Category, as individuals or teams of up to five members. Entry forms can be obtained from all post offices and public libraries or downloaded via the competition website at www.STAMP.sg. The closing date for submissions is 16 February 2007.
Top 40 Designs to be Showcased
The top 40 submitted designs selected by a jury panel will be announced on 2 March 2007. The successful participants will get to paint their designs on postboxes in the civic (City Hall), cultural (Chinatown, Little India, Kampong Glam), shopping (Orchard Road) and business (Shenton Way) districts in Singapore's city area over two to three Sundays between 11 and 25 March 2007. This in turn will allow them to put their "stamp" on the city as a tribute to the locality's distinctiveness.
