These two artists were chosen from the shortlist established by Alain Sayag, our 2007 artistic advisor, which consisted of 13 from among the 823 entries submitted altogether, 11% of which came from non-French photographers.
As it does every year, the Foundation will support the work of these laureates by copublishing their first monograph in collaboration with Actes Sud, a well-known publishing company. It will organize four exhibitions of their work in France and abroad. The 2007 laureates' work will be exhibited first in Madrid, during the 10th anniversary of PhotoEspana 2007, from May 30 to July 22 this year, then at the Galerie Baudoin Lebon in Paris in September 2007.
Given the very high quality of the entries submitted, the Executive Committee, acting on the proposal of Alain Sayag, has decided to award a special honour, associated with a 5,000 euro grant. The "Artistic Advisor's Discovery" was awarded to Cynthia Cappe.
Alain Sayag, commenting on his selection, noted that he had "sought to give equal weight to the different photographic approaches without favouring any particular one, since the differences between them are becoming less and less perceptible."
Chantal Nedjib, Executive Director of the Fondation HSBC pour la Photographie, would like to thank all the photographers who participated in the 2007 competition and congratulate the laureates: "The diversity, quality and quantity of the entries submitted encourage us to support the exhibition of our laureates' work in prestigious venues, thereby promoting their work to a wider public in France and other parts of the world."
