Collection of Art Deco Figures at Sotheby's London
EXHIBITION
ENGLAND.- The bronze and ivory figures of the 1920's and 1930's have been perennial favorites at the Decorative Arts auctions at Sotheby's from the very first sales held in the mid 1960s. On Wednesday, May 2, 2007, Sotheby's is delighted to announce that it will offer a distinguished single-owner sale of such figures at its New Bond Street saleroom in London and this follows a hugely successful 2006 for the Decorative Arts department in London, in which sales totaled an unprecedented £7.5 million.
The collection comprises some 42 figures by the great masters of Art Deco bronze and ivory decorative arts including the Romanian sculptor Demeter Chiparus (1886-1947), the German artists Johann Philipp Ferdinand Preiss (1882-1943) and Professor Otto Poertzel (1876-1963), the Belgian artist Claire J.R. Colinet (1882-1940) and the Austrian sculptor Bruno Zach (1891-1935). Paul Philippe, Marcel Bouraine, Pierre Le Faguays and Josef Lorenzl will also be represented amongst others. The group is outstanding in its coherence, breadth and condition and the life-like statues - often in elaborate, bejewelled costumes - truly embody the spirit and elegance of the streamlined, lavish Art Deco era. The collection is expected to fetch between £500,000-1,000,000.
The 42 figures represent a couple's long term passion for collecting. The couple, who are American, first developed an interest in Art Deco styles and fashions during their regular visits to the galleries of Paris and London in the mid 1980s. While they appreciated the flowing lines of the Art Nouveau era of the early 20thcentury, they preferred the more modern Art Deco designs of the 1920s and 1930s and on relocating to the French capital from the US in the 1990s, their enthusiasm deepened and they developed a particular passion for the bronze and ivory statues by Chiparus and Preiss. Adoring the workmanship of the ivory and bronze combination, they worked with select galleries in both Paris and London and chose their figures carefully.
