A New Commercial Center for Shenzhen Market
Designed by Callison, the number one retail design firm in the world (World Architecture, 2004-2007), Central Walk is an integral part of Shenzhen's long-term strategic community development plan. Once a small town of 10,000, Shenzhen was established in 1979 as China's first special economic zone (SEZ) based on its close geographic and cultural proximity to Hong Kong. Today it is considered the country's most successful SEZ with a population of nearly 11 million residents.
Located in the heart of the Shenzhen's bustling Central District, Central Walk serves as the hub to the city's newly developed cultural district, linking the Shenzhen International Convention Center, City Hall, Civic Square, Grand Central Park and neighboring upscale residential and hotel developments with an elaborate series of connected green walkways.
Sustainable Design Supports Environment
Central Walk balances environmental responsibility and resource efficiency with commercial viability. To achieve this, several factors including access to public transportation and green space, optimized energy performance, and a green-roof were incorporated to make Central Walk the first green mall in China. The building's recessed design allows the roof-garden to seamlessly connect with the street-level garden walkways and activities.
Integrated landscaping and cascading gardens throughout the project foster physical and visual connections to nature. At 26,000 square-meters (276,000 sf), the roof-top garden reduces heat island effect while restoring open space and natural habitat. The subterranean design and day-lighting optimizes energy performance. Roof skylights provide daylight to lower levels reduces dependence on artificial lighting during the day.
Dynamic Design Creates Variety and Distinction
Central Walk hosts a diverse array of international retailers, dining and entertainment tenants. The integration of high-end retail, entertainment and lush urban landscaping serves as an innovative business model for joint-venture developments in China.
