NEW YORK, May -- New York Education + Design (NYED), a unique initiative pairing New York City's top architects with high school students from the Urban Assembly School of Design & Construction (UASDC) will showcase its designs on Sunday, May 20th at CITY Magazine and NY3D's "Gathering on Greene" on Greene Street between Houston and Prince beginning at 5PM.
The program, created by NY3D Design New York, Inc., (NYIIID.com), an organization created to celebrate architecture and design in NYC, is providing more than 30 local New York City High School students the opportunity to ignite further career interest in design and construction by working side-by- side with internationally renowned architects and designn firm principals. The student/architect teams will "makeover" a total of six common areas and work spaces at the UASDC, including two hallways, two classrooms, the science lab and the principal's office.
This year, UASDC students have been working closely with David Schefer and Eve Lynn Schoenstein of David Schefer Design, Bruce Fowle of FXFowle, Kevin O'Connor of Arquitectonica, Clodagh of Clodagh Design, Emanuela Frattini Magnusson of EFM Design, and Ben Pell and Tate Overton of PellOverton to help create the plans for the reconstruction of their school. Treated as "clients", the students helped to create the designs into final presentations, and then were encouraged to consult, critique, and create the plans and incorporate their own ideas and theories of design.
"NYED came about from the belief that great design creates a better environment for learning," said Nancy Thiel, co-founder of NY3D Design New York, Inc, "and with one-on-one architect and student interaction, we could inspire and challenge young people from NYC public schools to put their love of design to practical and important use."
Construction is set to begin this summer, after school has been dismissed.
