Dell today hosted a Global Citizenship Workshop here to provide more than a dozen major suppliers with information and tools to improve workplace conditions using the Electronic Industry Code of Conduct (EICC) principles. Business for Social Responsibility Asia Director Jeremy Prepscius keynoted the day-long workshop. Dell was one of eight companies that in 2004 founded the EICC group, which now has 26 members.
During the workshop, Dell asked suppliers to sign a letter committing to EICC standards and partner with secondary suppliers to communicate the advantages of EICC standards, including a safer, healthier workforce and the productivity gains resulting from shared audits.
Suppliers already using EICC standards presented best practices and discussed plans to distribute EICC guidelines to their suppliers. Dell's business process improvement methodology was discussed as a proven, successful means to drive systemic improvements in quality and productivity. Several Dell suppliers already are using business process improvement practices to address issues such as excessive employee work hours and days off per month.
