Primaries is Jen Stark's first solo show at LMAK projects in Williamsburg, NY and presents forms of "primaries", not only primary colors and shape, but also a first presentation of the works.
Jen Stark's work is very distinctive in her bold use of color and materials. Her drawings are a combination of bright colors and abstract marks that morph into organic forms. On the contrary, her sculptures are more geometric and are created using stacks of card stock paper. In her animations she reveals both practices, which she transformed in a lively and playful narration of color and paper.
For Primaries, she is exhibiting paper sculptures, drawings and an animation. Three sculptures are presented that directly refer to the title: Red, Yellow and Blue. In these, she uses only one primary color per sculpture and fades it into a top layer of white. In a different piece, titled Burst, she uses the same sculptural cut-paper stack method yet uses an array of colors.
Though it seems like the title of the show refers to use of primary colors, she's also premiering three sculptures that reflect the primary shapes: Circled, Squared and Triangled. These sculptures hang on the wall and have shreds of colored paper that drape into each of the primary forms. Stark is also showing a first-time screening of her latest animation "Paper Cuts".
The Miami-based artists' exhibition will be on show through July 1, 2007.
