To ensure that the wood used as raw material for its paper products is procured from sustainable forestry production, the Seiko Epson Group ("Epson") has formulated a procurement management policy that traces Epson printer paper - including both regular and photographic paper - right back to the forest that produced the wood used to manufacture it.
Epson has worked toward green procurement for some time and already had fundamental procurement policies and guidelines in place for all production materials. Paper products were procured on the basis of these fundamental policies and guidelines. As awareness of the need to protect forests has grown over the last few years, illegal logging has come to be recognized as an increasingly serious problem. Given that companies have become more active in ensuring their international procurement of wood products is sustainable, Epson decided to establish a new procurement policy that considered the social, economic and environmental sustainability of forests and to ensure that the application of this policy can be confirmed for a wider range of its paper product procurement activities.
With the aim of including expert and objective opinions, Epson asked the World Wide Fund for Nature Japan (WWF Japan) to participate in the preparation of this new procurement policy. WWF Japan is one of five NGOs that issued a "Joint NGO Recommendation on Ecologically Ethical Paper Procurement." The goal of WWF Japan is stop the degradation of the planet's natural environment and to build a future in which humans live in harmony with nature. One of its activities is calling on companies to utilize forestry resources in appropriate ways that consider the balance between preservation and use. Epson's new procurement policy incorporates WWF Japan's thinking on the use of forestry resources and ensures comprehensive legal compliance and sustainability throughout the entire supply chain.
