The Strasburg clock model is one of the Powerhouse's most popular objects.
Built by clockmaker Richard Bartholomew Smith in Sydney between 1887 and 1889, the Strasburg clock model has been one of the Powerhouse Museum's most intriguing, eccentric and popular exhibits for over a century. Inspired by the 'Great Astronomical, Mechanical and Apostolic Clock' in the Strasbourg Cathedral in France, the museum's model can be appreciated on many levels --- from its representation of the universe as known to early astronomers to its fantastic confection of towers, staircases, mysterious dials, mechanical birds, cherubs, chariots and saints. Whatever your interest, you can discover more about the Strasburg clock model in this booklet.
