SVA Presents Abstract Nature
EXHIBITION

From June 30 - July 24, 2007

School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents "Abstract Nature," a photography and sculpture exhibition featuring works that explore natural forms and the boundaries between abstraction and representation. Curated by Richard Brooks, assistant director of student galleries, the artists include recent MFA Fine Arts Department graduate Hee Soo Kim and current BFA Photography Department student JuneYoung Lim.

Inspired by natural accumulation such as leaves layering the ground or rain filling the lakes, Hee Soo Kim's constructed abstractions hover between sculpture and painting. Working exclusively with multicolored rubber bands, Kim has built a vivid, densely layered field that demonstrates his own process of spontaneous accumulation.

In his series New Fossils, JuneYoung Lim's painterly photographs transform marine life, vegetables and flowers into timeless objects shrouded in mystery. Printed on canvas, Lim combined soft-focus, closely cropped images with scans of modern textiles to create elegant compositions that are simultaneously ancient and contemporary
