The June 28th auction of European Paintings at Bonhams in New York City featured more than 140 select works on canvas and panel, including a variety of continental works from Old Masters to Modern. The offering was highlighted by paintings by Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, Ardegno Soficci, Edouard Cortes and others.
Bidding was highly competitive, both nationally and internationally, for the highly selective sale. "The market has responded well to quality property from numerous sources across the globe," said Alan Fausel, Director of the Fine Arts dept. at Bonhams New York. "We are pleased at the response for the superior works on offer today."
The highlight of the sale was A Landscape with a Figure Kneeling in the Foreground by French romantic landscape painter Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot. The work stemmed from a Northern California private collection and was authenticated by Corot expert Martin Dieterle, the work depicts a field worker kneeling in the foreground under overcast skies with a farm off in the distance. Estimated to bring $120,000 to $180,000, the oil on canvas sold for nearly twice the high estimate at $312,000.
Warriors, an oil on canvas by Henri Emilien Rousseau, also sold above its estimate, bringing $40,800. Additional highlights from the European Paintings sale included strong results for Bottiglia con Foglie by Italian artist Ardegno Soficci (sold for $42,000) while a colorful work by the School of Paris artist Edouard Cortes depicting a bustling street scene, titled Boulevard de la Madeleine, sold for $48,000.
