Remember curling up on the couch with a mug of hot cocoa, mesmerized by the gentle wisdom of Mister Rogers or captivated by the vibrant adventures of Reading Rainbow? Those cherished programs of yesteryear are back in a big way thanks to the launch of the PBS Retro channel.
This free, advertisement-supported streaming service (FAST channel) offers a treasure trove of classic educational shows aimed primarily at a nostalgic adult audience, but sure to entertain curious kids as well. Launched on The Roku Channel, PBS Retro comprises a 24/7 lineup featuring iconic programs from the 1970s, 80s, and 90s. Viewers can expect to revisit beloved titles like Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, Reading Rainbow, Kratts’ Creatures, Zoboomafoo, and Thomas & Friends.

Its logo, interestingly, harks back to the classic blue, orange, and green branding dreamed up by Ernie Smith of Lubalin, Smith, Carnase, Inc that was in use from 1971 to 1984.
While PBS Retro undoubtedly taps into a deep well of nostalgia, it also offers a valuable resource for parents seeking wholesome screen time options for their children. The educational content on these classic shows provides a welcome alternative to the often frenetic pace of much of today’s children’s programming.
