Elon Musk’s AI Bot Destroying Top ‘Dota 2’ Players Will Scare Even Non-Gamers

Dota 2 is known to be one of the most challenging and complex multiplayer video games in the world. To become a professional player, it takes roughly “12,000-ish hours,” according to William ‘BlitzDota’ LeeDota expert and former pro player—who adds that it takes about a year just to learn the basics.

With the game happening in real-time, imagine the power of this AI bot, developed by Elon Musk’s AI research company OpenAI, that defeated not one, but eight top eSports players.

In this short video by Mashable, Lee and OpenAI’s Machine Learning Researcher Rafal Józefowicz share their perspectives on the technology from opposite sides of the coin.

“I was embarrassed,” says Lee. “This thing accomplished in like six months, what I set out to do for eight years.”

“People were upset. They didn’t want to give it the credit it deserved. Anything that can be programmed in six months to beat eight top players, one after another, I think it was…unlike anything.”

With roughly 30 decisions being made every second in the game, Józefowicz explains that it’s not feasible to hardcode all the strategies into the bot. Instead, the team lets the artificial intelligence adapt and grow through self-learning.

While impressive, the power of the technology is simultaneously chilling. As Lee puts it:

“It did things that we’ve never seen anyone do. It set a play style that we pretty much copy now.”
