Intimate, Hand-Drawn Maps Of Manhattan, By Famous & Ordinary New Yorkers
By Dorothy Tan, 09 Apr 2013
New Yorker Becky Cooper became interested in the subjectivity of map-making and started a collaborative art project.
By inviting her fellow New Yorkers to chart their individual experiences and memories on a schematic map of Manhattan, she was able to collect fascinatingly diverse and intimate narratives of the city.
After receiving dozens of these hand-drawn maps, she has collated some of the finest into a book—Mapping Manhattan: A Love (Sometimes Hate) Story in Maps by 75 New Yorkers—that features contributions from both famous and ordinary New Yorkers.
Some of the more well-known contributors includes Yoko Ono, writer Malcolm Gladwell and astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson.
How will your map of Manhattan look like? For inspiration, you can pick up Cooper’s book on Amazon.
