Disturbing Photos From The Insides Of Cars Involved In Accidents
By John Yong, 06 May 2013
In his thought-provoking photo series called ‘Car Crash Studies’, photographer Nicolai Howalt confronts the human fear of “trauma and death” by capturing the inside perspectives of cars involved in fatal accidents.
Stepping into wrecked cars, Howalt captures images of broken metal and glass, attempting to portray an “abstract, mental state… in relation to accidents or catastrophes” that we experience as spectators.
“Several of the images are vividly abstract and look more like landscapes than slashed up metal,” wrote Howalt. “Collided bodyworks, dents and cracks in varnish appear as highly enlarged details in the monumental works.”
“These ‘color plains’ become the ultimate instance of beauty created from suffering, pain and destruction.”
