By Dorothy Tan, 14 May 2013

Your choice directly affects how your evening would be—the right seat would mean an enjoyable and entertaining meal while the wrong one may put you in socially awkward situations like having long conversations with the intolerable bore sitting next to you.
To avoid getting stuck next to someone that sucks, follow the sitting plans laid out in Cornell’s helpful chart, which points out the best seats at a number of table arrangements.
Knowing which is the best seat is not enough because timing is also crucial—in some cases, to get to the optimal position, skillful maneuvering is required.
