Silkworms And Robots Work Together To Create Silk Pavillion
By Thia Shi Min, 04 Jun 2013
To explore how technology and nature can help create urban structures, the researchers at the MIT Media Lab have managed to use both robots and silkworms to create a silk pavillion of their own.
By programming a robotic arm to mimic a silkworm, the arm placed a kilometer-long silk fibre across polygonal frames that were made of metal.
These frames were re-arranged to form a dome, which was hung from the ceiling.
The team placed attached tiny magnets to the 6,500 live silkworms which were working on the structure, tracking and guiding their movements.
Scroll down to watch a video of how these researchers did it.
