In Japan, Adorable Animal-Shaped Donuts Become A Sensation
By Thia Shi Min, 16 Aug 2013
We have seen donuts in the shape of cats, but these aren’t the only animals getting made into pastry in Japan.
“Doubutsu doonatsu”, or animal donuts, are available in two shops, called “Animal Doughnut Ikumimama” and “Floresta”, with the latter starting this trend when a customer asked for these animal donuts.
Ikumi Nakao, who had a part in creating these treats, uploaded some picture of them onto Twitter in August last year, which became a viral hit.
She then opened up her own donut store in Kawasaki this June, called “Animal Doughnut Ikumimama”, serving a wide variety of these adorable confections.
Most “Floresta” stores sell these donuts, but it is better to call ahead and ask, just in case.
For those who do not live in Japan, the Animal Doughnut Ikumimama store ships their cute creations for US$9.
