Artist Creates Optical Illusion By Disguising A Bridge As Blue Skies
By Kelly Koo, 06 Sep 2013
If there is an entirely useless structure in the middle of a street, why not turn it into something decorative?
Artist Mike Hewson recognized this possibility while contemplating the uselessness of a bridge in a New Zealand town.
The bridge used to function as a walkway between two buildings. However, one of them was recently marked for demolition, rendering it useless.
Hewson decided to beautify this useless structure by painting it ‘into’ its surroundings.
With the clever use of paint, he created an optical illusion that ‘erased’ the bridge, replacing it with a clear, blue sky.
His work was also inspired by the Canterbury earthquake that afflicted the southern coast of New Zealand in 2010—residents had been frustrated by the destruction and reconstruction of their city.
Through his artwork, Hewson hoped that the residents could picture clear skies ahead.
